The first step in getting a loan is a credit check.
Every year, millions of Americans search the internet, hoping to get a free credit report. Did you know that according to the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA); we are entitled to a free credit report every year? Yet as I scan the internet in search of my credit report, the search seems to be an endless barrage of clubs and organizations who are only willing to hand over my free credit score report if I sign up for a free trial. While that may seem simple enough, why must I go to all the trouble with giving out my personal information and credit card number to an unknown company? After all, with all the identity theft going around; wouldn’t it be wiser not to give out all of our personal info to an unknown source?
It is the primary goal of the government to keep consumers informed by receiving fair treatment and fighting identity theft.
Everyone has the right to a copy of their credit report. Credit Reports are important because they break down the data that determines your credit scores. So what is included in this free deal? The government mandates that all three major credit reporting agencies provide U. S. citizens with a free credit repot each year. Those agencies are: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. In the past this was not always the case. At one time, if consumers wanted to check their credit report-they had to pay for it. However; as of September 1st, 2005-the entire nation was entitled to a free credit report.
So how do you get that free credit report without being scammed into paying to join an organization or signing up for a free trial? There is only one way you can acquire a copy of your credit report. The three major agencies have teamed up to provide you with a copy of your free credit report and credit scores. You can visit their website at www.annualcreditreport.com or simply give them a call at 877-322-8228.
You may call the agencies directly, but here again; you may have to pay a fee to receive your credit report. So the only way to receive a free credit report is by going to the website or calling the above number.
You can view your report online by visiting the above website. If you decide to call the toll free number instead, you may have a 2 week wait before you can see your report (they are mailed to you). Be prepared to give the appropriate information. You’ll need your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. Also be prepared to give prior addresses that may go back as far as 10 years! Oh, and one more bit of information you should know is that the regulation only requires that you receive a free credit report. This doesn’t include free credit scores.
